RALEIGH – Thom Tillis’ new television ad out this morning continues his desperate, election-year rewrite. Why? It appears Tillis is hoping North Carolinians might forget about his record of caving to his wealthy and corporate backers to gut unemployment benefits and block coverage for health care.
“Tillis can say whatever he wants to try to get elected, but he can’t rewrite his record of caving to his wealthy, corporate backers instead of standing up for the North Carolina families he now claims to be looking out for,” said Aaron Simpson, spokesman for Cal Cunningham’s campaign. “North Carolinians are ready for a leader that doesn’t just claim to understand them — but will fight for them, too. No doubt, voters will see straight through this blatant, election-year costume change.”
While Tillis pretends that he’s fighting for the 1 million North Carolinians out of work today, North Carolinians haven’t forgotten that “if you lose your paycheck in North Carolina, you can thank Tillis for being an architect of one of the stingiest state unemployment programs in the country.”
They also haven’t forgotten about his time as Speaker of the North Carolina House, “where he opposed Medicaid expansion” and championed a tax bill that eliminated tax breaks for middle class families, including those saving for college, while prioritizing tax breaks for the top earners — “a mistake that’s holding back North Carolina.”
As millions of Americans lose their employer-based coverage during the coronavirus pandemic, Tillis’ decision to block Medicaid expansion left hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians in the coverage gap today and our rural hospitals teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, all while voting 13 times to dismantle the Affordable Care Act that would end protections for 1.7 million North Carolinians living with pre-existing conditions.
