RALEIGH, NC — Senator Thom Tillis’ campaign today released a new TV ad on the heels of two ads questioning Tillis’ conservative credentials — a six-figure ad buy from a pro-Garland Tucker group calling Tillis “conservative when convenient,” and a similar ad from Garland Tucker’s campaign — the most significant sign yet that Tillis is sweating his primary challenge from Garland Tucker.
The new ad to defend Tillis on air follows a more than $2 million TV ad buy, plus digital ads, radio ads and a microsite. While he bleeds money to try to win his primary fight, reporters have noted he’s “not raising the money needed in an expensive state,” while in the most recent fundraising reports “Cal Cunningham edged Tillis out” among individual donors while not taking a dime from corporate PACs.

Responding directly to Tucker’s attacks on air is significant, though not surprising, as Tillis is under water with North Carolina’s GOP voters and has even been booed at Trump rallies in North Carolina.
In response to TIllis’ growing weakness, Mitch McConnell-aligned special interest groups are rushing to his defense, committing to spend $190 million to “protect McConnell’s most endangered incumbents” including Tillis.
