National Committee To Preserve Social Security And Medicare Endorses Cal Cunningham For Senate

Cal Cunningham Will Protect Medicare and Social Security, While Senator Thom Tillis Has Worked To Cut Them

RALEIGH, NC – The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare today endorsed Cal Cunningham for U.S. Senate over incumbent Senator Thom Tillis.

The organization advocates for the protection of earned benefits programs for current and future generations, so older Americans and their families can protect their health and retire with dignity. The organization has 49,000 members in North Carolina.

“Our nation needs Cal Cunningham’s leadership, vision and determination to fight for working families and older Americans,” said Max Richtman, President, CEO, and Chairman of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. “Cal has earned the endorsement of the National Committee because he understands and supports the critical roles that Social Security and Medicare play in the retirement and health security of our nation’s older citizens and their families. He’s well-prepared to serve the needs of seniors and will make the preservation and enhancement of Social Security and Medicare a priority in the Senate.”

“Instead of protecting Social Security and Medicare, Senator Thom Tillis and his allies have tried to take a chisel to them, threatening the retirement security of North Carolinians who’ve earned these benefits through hard work,” said Cal Cunningham. “In the Senate, I will not only fight harmful attempts to gut these programs, I’ll also look to expand them and make them stronger so every American can retire with dignity and stay healthy as they age.”

Cal is committed to protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare, unlike Senator Tillis who has:

  • Voted twice against protecting Social Security.

  • Voted for GOP budgets that would cut Medicare by nearly $500 billion.

  • Voted repeatedly to gut the Affordable Care Act, which could raise premiums for 60 million Medicare beneficiaries or force them to “pay more for preventive care, like a wellness visit or diabetes check” and “to pay more toward their prescription drugs” by eliminating key Medicare fixes in the law.

  • Suggested we could fund the GOP tax bill by taking aim at programs like Medicare and Social Security.

In addition to the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, Cal also has been endorsed by more than 140 North Carolina leaders, as well as VoteVets, the League of Conservation Voters, Voter Protection Project and End Citizens United, a group focused on combating the influence of big money in politics. The continued endorsements coincide with  three consecutive polls showing Cal beating Tillis.
