Cal Cunningham Statement on Trump Administration Plan to Withdraw Troops from Northeast Syria

RALEIGH, NC – Following the Trump Administration’s plan to withdraw troops from northeast Syria, exposing U.S. allies in the region, Army veteran and Democratic Candidate Cal Cunningham issued the following statement:

“I have served our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan so questions of war and peace are personal to me. Pulling troops out of Syria threatens to alienate our Kurdish allies, destabilize the region, and set us back in our efforts to defeat ISIS. It is promising that a bipartisan chorus of Senators has spoken out against this shortsighted decision, and Senator Thom Tillis should join them.”

Cal Cunningham is an Army veteran who served three tours of duty including in Iraq and Afghanistan. He received the Bronze Star and the Douglas McArthur Leadership Award for his service overseas and has trained Special Operations Forces at Fort Bragg, N.C.
