Cal Cunningham Demands Accountability Following Reports Of Russian Bounties On U.S. Troops

Members Of “Veterans & Military Families For Cal” Group Joined Cal For A Zoom Conversation To Demand Answers

RALEIGH, NC — As reports continue to surface of Russian bounties on U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Cal hosted a Zoom call with members of the “Veterans & Military Families For Cal” group to demand accountability and call on Senator Tillis to stand up for North Carolina’s military community.

During the event, Cal said: “If I were in the U.S. Senate today and learned that our Administration had been given this information, and it was reported they knew and did nothing, I’d be walking to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to demand answers on behalf of the thousands of servicemembers who call North Carolina home. Unfortunately, all we’ve seen from our Senator is a single tweet.”

As a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve who served three active duty tours, including in Iraq and Afghanistan, protecting U.S. troops is very personal to Cal. In the U.S. Senate, he will be a strong advocate for North Carolina’s servicemembers, veterans, and military families.

State Senator Kirk deViere, whose district includes Fort Bragg, joined Cal on the Zoom: “What I’ve heard is a lot of frustration from veterans down here. Too many times people just talk about support for our troops, but you and I both know as we served, we were taught deeds — not words. That’s something that we’re not seeing right now.”

Another member of “Veterans & Military Families For Cal,” General George Walls expressed his outrage: “I spent half of my adult life leading Marines at every rank I held, and I always have had a serious, very deeply felt responsibility for the fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters of the Marines that I led. And to be very honest with you — once I got this news — I’m madder than hell. I am just not happy with what I’m hearing, and I’m even less happy with the lack of response directly from our Commander in Chief.”

While Senator Tillis can’t muster up the courage to take action other than send a single tweet, Cal has called for accountability, including Senate hearings to determine what our country new and when they knew it, as well as excluding Russia from the G7 while we get to the bottom of these questions.
